Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God was slain to save the entire human race from eternal death and to reopen the gates of eternal life to man. It is important to note that God did not intentionally shut the doors of heaven to man. God did not remove man’s access to eternal life. It was the sin that Adam and Eve committed that caused the gate to life eternal to shut off and block man’s way.
God was a righteous God. He was just. He cannot stand the presence of sin because He was Holy. And since man became sinful, God was separated from man. So it was the sin that caused the separation. It was not God and it was not the will of God. According to the prophet Isaiah, “the Lord’s power is enough to save you. He can hear you when you ask him for help. It is your sins that separate you from your God. He turns away from you when he sees them.”
Sin was the stubborn stain that lingered on man’s nature. Nothing can be done by man to wash the stain away. No matter how man tried to remove the blemish from his being, he cannot because sin has been tattooed in him already. Because of sin, the Spirit of God cannot work into the man since God cannot stand the presence of sin. The prophet Habakkuk said to God, “Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity.” In the same manner, sin cannot co-exist with the presence of God simply because “God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all.” Man was so helpless. The only way man can go back to God was for the sins to be removed. Man needs to be cleansed from sins so he can be reconciled with God.
