So why does Sabbath matter? God gave the Ten Commandments to Moses for the people to comply and follow. Sabbath was one of the ten laws that everyone should adhereto. This is the fourth law of God. He said,
“Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the Lord your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work” (Exodus 20:8-10)
Sabbath is the day of rest. It is the day when people shall take a leave from their work or whatever that keeps everyone busy all week. But in a deeper perspective, the reason why God wanted the Sabbath was that first, to give rest to His people. Second, God wants to replenish what was lost during the week. Third and most important, God wants to spend time with His people. In the quoted passage above, you will notice how God put it in words, “but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the Lord your God.” You have six days of the week to yourself alone. What is a one day off to spend some time with God and thank Him for the strength and provision He has given you all week? The 6 days of the week’s 7 days are yours, God only wants A DAY. And so, remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy.
