Hearing and speaking of prophecies are normal among Christians. It is a spiritual gift that any Christian with a vulnerable heart can have. The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the church in Corinth said, “Love should be your guide. Be eager to have the gifts that come from the Holy Spirit, especially the gift of prophecy.”
Prophetic conversation is simply hearing and speaking of prophecies. When you receive prophecy or speak prophetically to someone, then you are in a prophetic conversation. Engaging in prophetic conversations is not weird or unusual for Christians. It is in fact encouraged. As the Apostle Paul had emphasized, it should be one of the goals of every Christian. Jesus said: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere – in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” So, it is not a rare gift. Prophesying is part of being a Christian. Speaking prophetically is a Christian thing.
Of course, there are people who are naturally born and called to be a prophet. While the gift of prophecy can be acquired through the Holy Spirit, some are just called to be prophets even before they were born. The prophet Jeremiah was among the prophets called by God to be His messenger. And God said to the prophet: “Jeremiah, I am and before you were born, I chose you to speak for me to the nations.”
Prophecies are messages of God. It can be word of wisdom, a word of blessing, a word of warning, a word of correction, a judgment from God, or even a word of encouragement. Prophecies are no weird messages. Just like the bible, prophecies are words of God of which He wants every follower of Him to hear and speak of.
How do people engage in prophetic conversations? Before the time of Christ, only prophets and high priests were allowed to talk to God.4 A commoner cannot stand the presence of God because He was holy and righteous. The bible said: “Long ago in many ways and at many times God’s prophets spoke his message to our ancestors.”5 People from the past received the message of God through prophets.
But after the work of Christ on the cross, everyone who receives Jesus and seeks him with all his heart, mind, and soul can talk directly to God. Every Christian can now converse to God, hear His word, and even speak His word to a brother in Christ. Anybody can engage in prophetic conversations now. According to the bible, “God sent his Son to bring his message to us. God created the universe by his Son, and everything will someday belong to the Son.”6 This is possible because Jesus Christ became the mediator between God and man. Christians can converse prophetically because of Jesus.
